Assessment of physical education program and student progress in physical education

Physical education is part of the curriculum content in the Kenyan Education system. With lessons allocated to facilitate its implementation, the various aspects of the physical education are often not evaluated. Evaluation of the programs helps to:

  • Provide feedback on the effectiveness of the programs to attain te set goals
  • Enhance planning on the future programs
  • Identify the areas that need improvement for better implementation
  • Identify the skills already developed

The key objectives of including physical education in the curriculum as outlined in the KICD syllabus for secondary schools in Kenya are outlined below:

  1. Develop physical and neuromuscular skills
  2. Perform skillful and efficient movements through physical and mental coordination
  3. Develop knowledge and eperience of movement concepts for expression and communication
  4. Develop good citizenship and national cohesiveness through sporting activities
  5. Develop social skills through physical activities
  6. Appreciate and participate in both national and international sport and dance for understanding, respect and preservation of own and other cultures
  7. Engage in physical activities in order to promote health, fitness and general body growth and development
  8. Appreciate physical education and sports as foundation for further education and career
  9. Explore and appreciate the environment through physical activities
  10. Identify, develop and nurture individual talents in specific sports
  11. Develop creativity, ability for inquiry and individual initiative
  12. Enjoy and appreciate participation in movement for its own sake
  13. Develop self-discipline through the understanding and application of rules and regulations in games and sports
  14. Promote the development of the skills for recreation and positive use of leisure
  15. Develop awareness of safety skills and preventive measures in physical education and sports

To determine the attainment of the above objectives among the learners undertaking the programs, several evaluation and assessment techniques are key. The evaluation method must try to establish the KEY indicators and extend of attainment of the skills. The following aspects are measured:

  • Standard of performance - involves assessment of skills and techniques, health and fitness state of the individuals involved in a particular physical activity
  • Skill aquisition - Establish is a skill is developed, talent nurtured by observing the execution of the skills and methods involved
  • Attitude - the value attached to the particular activity the learner is involved in
  • Puctuality - indiviaduals must have the ability to observe timelines and shedules
  • Obedience - the ability to adhere to the set guidelines and rules to govern the execution of a particular task during the physical activity
  • Commitment - demonstrate focus and seriousness with the physical activity involved

Other aspects of evaluation include efforts, discipline, team work, sportspersonship and leadership.

The evaluation and assessment methods are highlighted below:

  • Observation
  • Written tests
  • Oral tests
