Importance of objectives in measurement and evaluation during learning process

Teaching and learning process entails step by step preparation and execution. The process begins by carefully designing the curriculum which guides on the content and the general objectives to be attained in the process of implementation. The content is tailored to enhance the attainment of the objectives set at the begining of the process.

For instance, Agriculture is one of the subjects included in the syllabus to help attain the general objectives of the education in Kenya. To determine the effectiveness of the implementation, evaluation is key.

Evaluation is an important process to the teacher because it helps:

  • Measure the learner performance and achievement in the process of learning

  • Determine the effectiveness of the methods used in the content delivery process

At the beginning of each topic are specific objectives. The objectives guide the teacher in development of the assessment and evaluation tools. The tools should be able to determine the level of achievement as a result of the learning process.

The verbs used to develop the evaluation items include state, explain, describe, relate, distinguish, prepare, carry out among others. The same terms are used to develop the objectives for the lessons carried out to facilitate the attainment of the educational objectives.

The objectives are usually very important for the following reasons:

  • Guide the teacher to determine what the learner is expected to do, to what extent and the manner in which the activity should be undertaken. For example
An objective that states: By the end of the topic, the learner should be able to milk the cow within five minutes states more specifically the determinant of how, what and where.
  • Guides the teacher on the methodology to be used in the learning process. For example
An objective that states: By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to prepare a nursery bed to raise seedlings. This will require the teacher to carry out demonstration on how the nursery bed is prepared to enable the learner gain the skills needed.
  • Guide on the method of assessment used during the evaluation process to determine the achievement. For example
The verb in the objective always guides on the evaluation method: For instance, the verb prepare may need a practical hands on activity to enable the learner demonstrate the needed skill and knowledge.
  • Guide the depth of coverage of the subject content. For instance, an objective that requires the learner to state does not need deep coverage of the concepts. However, the verb like explain need in depth coverage of the subject content.
  • The teacher is able to evaluate his methodology for improvement.

Based on the above, it is clear that the objectives are key to ensuring proper implementation of the educational curriculum.
